Abiu Fruit Live Plant (Pouteria Caimito) is a beautiful and delicious tropical fruit tree that is becoming increasingly popular for its sweet, juicy fruit. If you are interested in growing an Abiu Fruit Live Plant, please follow the comprehensive guide given below, to ensure your Abiu Fruit Live Plant grows healthy and produces abundant fruits.

How to care for Abiu fruit plant?

Location and Soil

The first and foremost step is to choose the right location. The tree prefers 6 - 8 hours of direct sunlight. Over sunny or over shaded locations impacts the growth and fruiting of the plant. Avoid the areas that are susceptible to standing water as it may cause root rot if the soil is damp. Soil drainage can be improved by adding organic matter such as organic dry vermicompost or desi cow dung manure or garden red soil to the planting hole.

Watering

Abiu Fruit plants are drought-tolerant, but they prefer consistently moist soil. Watering the tree regularly is very important, especially during the growing season to ensure the soil remains moist. It is important to avoid over-watering as it leads to root rot. The best way to check if your plant needs water is to stick your finger about an inch into the soil. If the soil feels dry, it’s time to water.

Fertilising

Abiu Fruit Live Plants need regular fertilisation, especially during the growing season. Use organic fertilisers such as Phosphobacteria, Decomposed Desi Cow Dung Manure, Rhizobium, Vermicompost. Fertilise the tree every two to three weeks during the growing season and less frequently during the winter.

Pruning

Pruning is important to maintain the size and shape of the Abiu Fruit Plant and also to remove damaged and diseased branches. Remove any crossing or damaged branches during late winter or early spring and shape the tree to promote good airflow and light penetration.

Harvesting

The blooming/fruiting time of Abiu Fruit plants is 2 - 3 years and it is ready for harvest about 3 to 4 months after flowering. The fruit will turn from green to yellow when it is ripe, and it will easily detach from the tree when gently tugged. It is important to harvest the fruit regularly to encourage the tree to produce more.

Pests and Diseases

Abiu Plants are relatively disease resistant but are attacked by sucking pests like scale insects, mealybugs, and spider mites. Organic pest controller for sucking pests can be used to eliminate them. Common diseases include root rot, powdery mildew, and leaf spot. To prevent these problems provide the tree with proper care which includes proper watering and also spray neem oil to prevent fungal infections like powdery mildew and leaf spot.

Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a beginner, Abiu Fruit Plants are the best addition to your garden. The average height of the Abiu Plant is 10-20 feet (3-6 metres). With proper care, your tree will provide you with delicious fruit for years to come.
