  • Weeder is a handheld gardening tool that is used to pull out the weeds
  • Weeds take up extra space in the garden, absorbing the nutrients that are supposed to reach the plants. With weeder, the overgrown weeds can be pulled out providing adequate space for the plants to thrive and flourish.
  • The weeder comes with a forked end that makes it easier to remove thick roots.
  • The forking tines makes the tool act as a lever to pull out the weed along with the roots.

What is a Weeder?

A weeder or a hand weeder is a gardening essential tool that has forked edges attached to a plastic handle. The size of the tool is similar to that of a gardening trowel except a weeder has a thin metal extension with split forking tines. The forking tines makes the tool act as a lever to pull out the weed along with the roots.

How to Use Weeder

1.Moisten the Soil

Before pulling the weeds, we should moisten the soil. This can be done the night before unless it is already raining. The goal is to make the job easier. Loose soil will help pull out the weed with less effort.

2.Wear Gardening Gloves

To use the weeder, it is essential to put on gardening gloves. It helps in better grip and protects hands from getting soil stains. It is also advised to use a kneeling pad (optional) to further ease the task and do it faster.

3.Put the Hand Weeder to Work

Place the forked portion of the weeder near the root to loosen the soil around. This way the roots will come out easily when poked with the tool. Go far enough down the soil to get around as much of the root as possible. Now, when the forked part is sufficiently poked around the root, push the hand weeder down at an angle and pull it out to remove the weed. Porking at a 45-degree angle up to 3 inches deep is optimal. Larger weeds and weeds with thick roots will require us to dig deeper into the soil. In such cases, the soil around should be loosened up well and the weeder should be held deeper in the soil.

4.Remove Leftover Root Pieces

Another essential step is to check for remaining (leftover) portions of the roots of the weeds in the dugout places. Leftover roots will regrow into weeds and thus should be carefully removed.

The pulled weeds should be thrown away from the garden otherwise they will find their ways to regrow.
