Planting and care for red spinach seeds

Sowing red spinach seeds

Seeds of red spinach can be easily propagated. Late in the spring, sow the small seeds directly in the soil at the spinach grow bags. If the soil is warm, germination is usually quick and successful. Germination is aided by a dip in temperature overnight. Indoor seedlings can be started for transplanting. Transplants can be started 6 to 8 weeks before the arrival of spring. Seeds should be placed in rows 10 to 12 inches apart, to a depth of 1–2 cm.

Harvesting red spinach

To harvest Red spinach, pick the individual leaves as needed for greens. Younger greens are great for salad, and older greens are better cooked as a substitute for spinach. The time from planting to harvest is between 20 and 30 days from seed sowing. You can also cut your spinach when it is between one and two feet tall. It would be best to cut the whole stem, maybe six to ten inches above the ground. The stem will re-shoot and can be harvested again.

Precautions while growing red spinach

To keep the soil cold, keep the spinach equally moist and mulch the planting beds. Floating row coverings protect seedlings from flea beetles, aphids, and leafhoppers. Plants should be spaced 6 inches apart for optimal growth and air circulation. Keep the garden free of plant detritus, which can serve as a breeding ground for pests.

Common Problems affecting red spinach plants and solutions

  • Damping-off is a fungus that lives in the soil and thrives in damp environments. Planting in cold, damp soil is not recommended. Ensure that the soil is sufficiently drained.
  • Deficiency in nitrogen turns the leaves to a faded yellow color. Spinach is vulnerable to nitrogen deficiency. Every 10 to 15 days, apply a side dressing of compost tea. Every two years, add old compost to planting beds. Add Azospirillum Nitrogen Fixing Biofertilizer if required.
  • Extended daylight with hot temperatures, or cool temperatures followed by very warm temperatures, 80°F or higher, might cause bolting. Plant spinach so that it is ready to harvest when the weather is cool.
  • Aphids are pear-shaped insects that live on the undersides of leaves and are small, oval, and yellowish to greenish. They leave behind honeydew, sticky feces that can turn into a dark sooty mould. A blast of water from the hose will kill aphids on leaves. Insecticidal soap should be used.
  • The larvae of leaf miners burrow through the leaves. To kill larvae and prevent adult flies–which are black with yellow stripes–from laying eggs, eliminate contaminated leaves, and tend the garden. Floating row covers can be used to protect crops.
  • Flea beetles are a sixteenth of an inch long golden or black beetle. Seedlings and little transplants have tiny holes in their leaves that they consume. The larvae eat the roots of newly sprouted plants. Diatomaceous earth should be spread around the seedling. Cultivate frequently to throw off the life cycle. Keep the garden tidy.
  • Armyworms are dark green caterpillars with a wingspan of 112 inches that are the larvae of a mottled grey moth. Armyworms swarm and consume the leaves, stems, and roots of a wide range of crops. Armyworms will reside in the webs that spiders create on leaves. Caterpillars should be hand-picked and destroyed.
  • Use of bio pest control for sucking and biting pests is highly recommended in case of severe infestations.
