Papaya, also known as "Carica papaya," is a tropical fruit of significant commercial appeal due to its high nutritional and medicinal value.  It bears fruits earlier than any other fruit crop, in less than a year, and produces a high yield of fruits per unit area. Raw papaya pulp contains 88 percent water, 11 percent carbohydrates, and a marginal amount of fat and protein. 100 grams of papaya fruit contains 43 kilocalories and is a good source of vitamin C and a good source of folate.

Benefits/Uses of Papaya

  • Protection Against Heart Disease
  • The antioxidants vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E are abundant in papayas. High antioxidants diets may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. They neutralize the cholesterol radicals. As cholesterol oxidizes, it increases the likelihood of forming blockages that result in heart disease.

  • Digestion and Reduced Inflammation
  • The papaya fruit contains two enzymes that help to minimize inflammation: papain and chymopapain. They are useful for treating pain, like that with third-degree burns, and they can aid in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, like asthma and arthritis.

  • Nutrition and Immune system
      • Papaya is also an excellent source of Vitamin A, another critical vitamin for maintaining a balanced and functioning immune system.
      • Might potentially decrease the risk of prostate cancer
      •  A medium-sized papaya is rich in over 200% of the recommended daily vitamin C level, which assists in the reduction of heart disease and helps the immune system to strengthen. Additionally, it is a good source of

    Planting and care of papaya

    Sowing of papaya seeds

When it comes to selecting Hybrid papaya seeds India, it is prudent to purchase from a reputable supplier like seed2plant. It is also prudent to read the feedback and seek guidance from an experienced individual when it comes to purchasing Organic Papaya seeds online India and obtaining knowledge about growing.

Plant two to four seeds in a pot, uniformly spaced, and cover with 14 to 12 inch of soil. When possible, choose full sun to maximize fruit production and taste. Soak the seeds in water to moisten the soil. Regularly water the seeds to keep the soil moist, but avoid over watering the plants.

At planting, apply a full fertilizer to containers and repeat every two months. You can add vermicompost if you wish to avoid chemical fertilizer. When seedlings exceed a few inches in height or have two sets of leaves, they are ready to transplant. When the new papaya plants outgrow their pots, transplant them into the field in full sun and well-drained soil. Normally, papaya seeds germinate in two to three weeks.

    Growing papaya

Regular watering is critical during the plant's development. Water in all dry conditions, but avoid excessive watering. Every two months, add a layer of compost and fertilizer. Too rich soil, excessive watering, and excessive fertilizer can all contribute to decreased yield. Assure that the flowers and leaves are not wet, as this promotes the growth of fungal diseases. They are drought resistant, but avoid wet weather if possible.

Climate & Soil Requirements for Papaya farming:

    • One must keep in mind that papaya is frost-sensitive. Its climatic requirements are tropical.
    • Papaya plants want a moist, warm atmosphere.
    • It thrives at temperatures between 38 and 440 degrees Celsius, with an optimal range of 22 to 360 degrees Celsius, with a day temperature of 350 degrees Celsius and a night temperature of 250 degrees Celsius being the most suitable.
    •  It needs fertile soil; it is incompatible with deep clayey, calcareous, and rocky soils. It thrives in well-drained soil with a pH range of 6-7.

     Harvesting papaya

Harvest the fruits when they are matured and begin to produce a yellow tinge at the apex. Latex is another indicator of harvesting period. Once the latex begins to become watery rather than milky, the fruits must be harvested. Not all papaya varieties ripen to a yellow color. While some turn yellow when fully mature, some remain green.

Papaya has a cumulative economic life of four years. However, farmers do not prolong its existence beyond 2-3 years, as production begins to decline after the third year. Good farming and timely treatment will significantly increase the production of papaya.

Papayas must be free of accidents or blemishes at the time of harvest. These factors may increase the likelihood of fungal contamination. In that case, the fruits will begin to rot rapidly, lowering their market value. Due to the perishable nature of papayas, each one must be individually wrapped in paper and then put in wooden crates. Straw, sawdust, or other soft material must be used to line the crates to cover the papayas during transportation.

    Precautions while growing papaya

The pH of the soil used for red lady papaya cultivation should be between 5.5 and 7.5. To prevent root rot, the planting area should have good drainage.

For the best production results, apply a 6-inch layer of mulch around the base of the papaya plant, using shredded leaves or shredded bark. Mulch fertilizes the roots of the papaya as it decomposes, while also conserving soil moisture and preventing weed growth.

Common problems affecting papaya and solutions

The main diseases that affect papaya crops are, powdery mildew, stem rot and damping off. Water logging around the roots is the chief reason for rots to occur. Wettable Sulphur, carbendazim and mancozeb are effective in controlling these diseases.

Aphids, red spider mite, stem borer, fruit flies, grey weevils and grasshoppers are the insects attacking papaya plants. Destroying the infected part and spraying prophylactic spray like 0.3% dimethoate would help control them.

    Fertilisers for Papaya

For papaya, fertilizers should be applied once in every two months. Although fertilizer application in a particular region depends on the soil and leaf analysis, generally 90 g of Urea, 250 g of Super phosphate and 140 g of Muriate of Potash per plant are recommended for each application.
