Sowing and Caring
- To start, the seeds should be sown in small/ medium sized seedling trays. Organic soilless medium like coco peat should be used to sow the seedling. Germination occurs between 6-8 days. Seedlings should be kept indoors until germination.
- Mist spray should be used to water to avoid overwatering the seedlings.
- On germination, the celery should be kept in partial sun until the first true leaves appear and mature. At this point, it should be transferred to small round bags and kept in full sun to partial shade.
- Use a comfortable Grow bag like Seed2Plant HDPE spinach round grow bags to transfer the seedlings. Use organically enriched potting mix like the one we have. Keep the soil slightly loose for the roots to breathe. 2 part gardening soil + one part vermicompost + one part cocopeat is the optimal medium to grow celery.
- Celery requires full to partial sun for a good growth and watering every other day in winters. It is suggested to add vermicompost every 2-3 weeks.
Harvest
- Harvest can begin 90-110 days after planting the seeds. Celery reaches the height of 8 inches when mature. The outer stalk should be removed carefully.
- It is suggested to make a diagonal cut over the outer stalk to harvest. This procedure will encourage the inner stalk to mature.
Common Problems
- High humidity causes a fungal condition called damping off that causes the leaves to wilt and collapse.
- Nutrient deficiency leads to yellowing of leaves.
Precautions
- Overwatering should be avoided and the soil should be well-drained to avoid fungal infection. Water only from the soil is dry 1-2 inches from the top.
- Vermicompost or any organic soil enrichers should be added once in 2-3 weeks to stimulate growth. Nitrogen rich fertilizers like Azospirillum should be added to balance nitrogen requirements.
