Gaillardia, also known as the blanket flowers, are easy to grow daisy-like flowers producing festive blooms from summer to fall (rainy season). The blooms come in warm colors of red wine, orange, peach, yellow and sometimes a combination of red and orange. The nectar-attracting plants are drought resistant perennials enjoying full sun and fertile soil. These long bloomers make excellent border plants. Their thread-like leaves add ornamental value to the cheerful flowers.

How to Care

• Gaillardia can be planted any time after the frost in manure rich soil like the one we have. Gaillardia demands fertile soil to produce its beautiful blooms. The seeds should be spaced 1 foot apart to prevent overcrowding. 
• It is best to germinate the seedling in a seedling tray and transfer it to the soil or suitable grow bags after the frost has passed completely (February or March is the best time to sow). 
• Requires frequent watering until seedling erupts. Water whenever the topsoil becomes dry. Once grown, the plants could tolerate extreme drought and thus could be watered occasionally. 
• In moderate to highly fertile soil and with frequent misting with water, Gaillardia will germinate in 2-3 weeks. 
• The flowering season starts from summer and lasts till October or November in India. Gaillardia does not require deadheading (removing dead flowers from the stalk) to stimulate new growth. However, deadheading the dried flower stems will lead to continuous fuller flowerings. 
• Gaillardia can tolerate extreme drought and does not require lots of water. They grow well in manure rich soil. It is advisable to add fertilizers every 4-6 weeks. 
• The flowers are also susceptible to pest attacks. Leafhoppers tend to attack the plants. The plants are also susceptible to fungal attacks. When leaf spots or browning are spotted it is advisable to prune the portion of the plant or remove the stalk completely to prevent the spreading of attacks. Using organic pesticides like Neem oil will prevent fungal and pest attacks.
