Planting and care for red long beans

Sowing red long beans seeds

The best way to grow yard long beans is to plant them directly in the grow bags. Ensure the soil is wet, and sow the seeds when the temperature is between 22 and 32 degrees Celsius. Beans should always be grown in the sunniest part of your terrace garden. Long bean seeds should be sown 7cm apart and covered with 5cm of fine soil. Lightly press the soil and water it. Seedlings can appear in 10-14 days, depending on the soil and weather conditions.

Growing red long beans

Full sun is ideal for flowering and development. Fertile, well-drained soil is needed, but not too much nitrogen should be present. Each week, give them at least one inch of water. Harden seedlings a week ahead of time by leaving them outdoors for a few hours each day, progressively growing the time. A cool frame in the shade is ideal for acclimating plants. Bean plants should be spaced at the same distances as when they were sowing.

Harvesting red long beans

Yard long beans have a long growing season, with harvesting taking up to 90 days. When the beans are the size of a pencil, they should be picked. When the beans inside fill up, the beans lose their tenderness and crispness if you wait too long. That's why it's critical to harvest them while they're still firm, between 20 and 30cm long. Once the yard-long beans begin to grow, it's critical to harvest them every day to keep the plant productive.

Precautions while growing red long beans

Seedlings may need some motivation to grasp their supports (creeper nets can be used), but they will soon find their way up. Bushes don't need much protection, but bean-laden plants may benefit from short canes, twigs, or peasticks to hold them off the ground. In dry weather, keep your beans well-watered, particularly once they begin to bloom. Mulching around the base of the plants keeps the ground moist for longer and makes weeds more difficult to control. Any weeds that do poke through should be pulled out by hand to avoid damaging the bean plant's roots. When pole beans have hit the top of their supports, pinch out the tops. It keeps them from being a tangled mess, and it directs the plants' efforts toward growing more flowers and beans.

Common Problems affecting red long beans plants and solutions

Bean rust appears on the leaves as rust-like pustules. Allow plenty of space for plants, water from the roots rather than the leaves, and keep weeds at bay. Remove and destroy any infected leaves.

On the undersides of leaves, spider mites live in colonies. They will ruin your crop by attacking bean pods. Pesticides should be avoided because they can destroy beneficial predators. Instead, promote predators, apply neem oil to plants, and keep them well-watered so they can defeat mites.

Bean weevils eat both rising beans and dried beans that have been processed. Freeze beans for a few days to destroy weevils in your food storage. Outside, keep plants well-fertilized and in good soil so they'll be able to fend off pests. In the spring, you can also cover seedlings to keep weevils away.

In wet areas, the stem nematode pest is a particular concern. It comes from infested soils and seeds, so use only certified clean soil and seeds.

Cutworms chew plant stems and roots. You won't know you have them until your plant starts to wither and die. Place bio pest control for biting pests and diatomaceous earth around your plants will help prevent this pest from destroying your developing beans. If you see some worms, pick them up by hand.

Cucumber beetles are spotted, consume plants and spread disease, making them a double-edged sword. Again, covering plants is the safest way to avoid an infestation, but bio pest control can be used to kill these tiny animals.
