Product Description - Organic Lettuce Seeds - Open Pollinated

As a cool-season crop, lettuce thrives throughout spring and fall in most regions. It's an excellent leafy green to grow because it grows rapidly, produces for an extended period of time, and is relatively little maintenance as long as you keep it adequately watered. Additionally, it thrives in raised beds and containers, making it an excellent choice for tiny spaces. Lettuce is a low-calorie, low-sugar, and low-fat leafy vegetable that is mostly farmed for its pleasant green leaves with a moderate flavour. Lettuce is grown for more than just its leaves; it is also used for its stems and seeds.

Benefits/Uses of Lettuce

  • Lettuce is high in vitamin K, which aids in bone strength.
  • Water accounts for more than 95% of raw lettuce. As a result, eating lettuce helps the body retain water.
  • Lettuce is high in Vitamin A, which can help reduce a person's risk of developing cataracts.
  • Lettuce's nutritional content varies according to variety. Almost all lettuces are high in vitamin A and contain trace amounts of vitamin C and iron.

Planting and care for Lettuce

Sowing Lettuce seeds

  • Seeds were directly sown in soil amended with composted organic matter approximately one week prior to sowing in a grow bag.
  • The soil should be loose and drained well to maintain a moist but not soggy condition.
  • Choose a sunny location for optimal growth. Ideally, the plants should receive at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, though lettuce will grow with less.
  • Typically, seedlings emerge in 7 to 10 days.
  • Following your initial sowing, sow additional seeds every two weeks to ensure a steady supply of lettuce.

Growing Lettuce

  • Lettuce will communicate when it requires water. Consider it! If the leaves are wilting, sprinkle them at any time of day or night to cool them off and slow the rate of transpiration. Additionally, Garden Agro Shade Net can assist in preventing lettuce from drying out in the sun.
  • Organic mulch helps conserve moisture, suppresses weeds, and maintains cool soil temperatures during the summer months.
  • If necessary, weed by hand, but take care not to damage your lettuce plants' shallow roots.
  • To prevent lettuce plants from bolting, cover them with a Garden Agro Shade Net to provide filtered light.

Harvesting Lettuce

  • Lettuce should be harvested when it reaches full size but is still immature. When the leaves are young and tender, they have the best flavour.
  • You can harvest leaf lettuce before it reaches maturity by simply removing the outer leaves to allow the centre leaves to continue growing.
  • Mature lettuce becomes bitter and woody and spoils quickly, so check your garden daily for leaves ready to harvest.
  • Harvest lettuce in the morning time, before the leaves are exposed to the sun, as the leaves will be the crispest at this time.

Precautions while growing Lettuce plant

Lettuce should be watered lightly, frequently, and consistently. Always keep the soil moist. Avoid excessive watering – excessive watering results in root rot, disease, and stunted growth.

If organic matter and a slow-release organic fertilizer are added to the soil prior to planting, additional fertilization of your fast-growing lettuce plants is unnecessary.

Common Problems affecting Lettuce plants and solutions

Aphids are capable of completely destroying a lettuce patch. As nutrients and water are sucked from the leaves, they curl and wilt. Additionally, aphids spread disease and contribute to mould problems. These irritating little white pests can be found on the undersides of lettuce leaves. Because there is no systemic insecticide available to control aphids, your best bet is to use bio pest controllers.

Snails, slugs, and caterpillars, on the other hand, adore lettuce. While using bio pest control for sucking and biting pests are one option, traps, organic bait, and handpicking are also viable options for controlling these common pests.

If you notice your lettuce turning brown and curling, it may be suffering from tipburn. It is because the moisture content is inconsistent. Trim the browned lettuce and establish a regular watering schedule.

Oh so delicious Arugula!

This image is after 2 harvests. I may have planted them too close, but I love baby salad greens and so this size of jarjeer is the best for me. Please plant a little farther apart if you like larger leaves.

Most seeds germinated and are thriving in Gujarat on my apartment balcony. Very happy with the purchase. The soil is from seed2plant.in as well.
