Perfect for Indian climates, this tropical fruiting cactus is ideal for both container gardening and outdoor planting.
Key Features
Super Sweet Fruit:
The Palora variety is celebrated for its intense sweetness, offering a unique flavour experience with crunchy seeds. The fruit is oval-shaped with a thorny exterior that becomes smooth as the thorns fall off when ripe.
Vibrant Yellow Skin:
As the fruit matures, it transitions from green to a striking yellow, making it a visually appealing addition to your garden.
Exotic Flowers:
The Palora dragon fruit produces large, fragrant, bell-shaped flowers that bloom at night. These white blooms fill the air with a sweet scent and are a stunning sight, though they last only one night, leaving an unforgettable impression.
Low Maintenance:
This Ecuador Palora plant is perfect for those seeking a low-maintenance yet exotic fruit-bearing plant. It requires minimal watering and thrives in well-drained soil with full sunlight.
Climbing Cactus:
The Palora dragon fruit, with its vining growth habit, requires support such as a sturdy frame, trellis, wooden posts, or wall columns to reach its full potential, growing up to 4-6 metres in height. To encourage fruiting, it's crucial to provide a tall and sturdy trellis.
Nutritional Powerhouse:
Rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants, and cancer-fighting agents, this fruit is not only delicious but also packed with health benefits.
Perfect for Gardens, Terraces, and Balconies
Whether you have a spacious garden, a terrace, or a compact balcony, the Palora dragon fruit can thrive in containers or directly in the ground. For container planting, choose pots or grow bags 18 to 24 inches in diameter with ample drainage holes to ensure proper growth. This makes it a versatile choice for any outdoor space.
Planting & Care Instructions
Location:
Choose a sunny spot that receives at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Dragon fruit thrives in warm, bright conditions and needs ample sunlight for healthy growth and fruit production.
Soil:
Plant the Yellow Ecuador Palora Dragon Fruit in well-drained, nutrient-rich potting soil. Ensure the soil has a slightly acidic to neutral pH, ideally between 5.5 and 6.5, for optimal growth. Mix in perlite to improve drainage.
Planting Depth:
Plant the dragon fruit in free-draining soil, ensuring it's buried 1-2 inches deep.
Watering:
Water the plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Dragon fruit plants are drought-tolerant, so increase watering during the hot summer months and reduce it during the cooler winter season.
Temperature:
The plant thrives in temperatures ranging from 15°C to 40°C. It is ideal for regions with warm climates. Protect it from frost and extreme cold.
Pruning:
Prune to remove dead or unproductive stems and encourage more fruit production, using sterilised tools to ensure clean cuts.
Fertilisation:
Use organic fertilisers like goat dung manure, fish amino acid, and bone meal during the growing season, applying them once a month. Be careful to avoid over-fertilisation, as it can harm the plant.
Pest and Disease Management:
Keep an eye out for common pests like mealybugs, aphids, and termites. Use Verticillium lecanii biopesticide, pest controllers for sucking pests, or neem cake to manage them effectively. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal infections.
Harvesting and Usage
Harvesting Time:
The fruit ripens about 35 days after flowering. It is ready for harvest when the skin turns completely yellow, and the thorns fall off easily.
Uses:
The Yellow Ecuador Palora Dragon Fruit is versatile and can be enjoyed fresh, added to fruit salads, or used in desserts like jams, jellies, and ice creams. Its unique flavour also pairs well with savoury dishes.
