Introducing Changalamparanda / Adamant Creeper (Cissus quadrangularis), a versatile and powerful medicinal plant known for its wide range of health benefits. Also called Pirandai, Hadjod, Winged Treebine, and Veldt Grape, this evergreen climbing succulent from the Vitaceae family is renowned for its bone-healing properties, anti-inflammatory effects, and nutritional richness, making Changalamparanda a valuable addition to any garden.

Key Features:

Fast-growing Perennial Climber:

The Pirandai plant can grow up to 5 metres, making it ideal for growing on the ground, a terrace, or a balcony—this versatile plant can thrive anywhere.

Nutrient-Rich:

Loaded with vital nutrients such as vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and magnesium, Pirandai offers a natural boost for overall health.

Ideal Growing Conditions:

Soil:

Thrives in well-drained soil with good aeration. A mix of garden soil, sand, and organic compost is perfect for optimal growth. Adding perlite or vermiculite improves drainage, keeping roots healthy.

Sunlight:

Requires at least six hours of direct sunlight. While it prefers warm temperatures, it can handle mild frost as well.

Watering:

Regular watering is essential, but avoid overwatering. Allow the topsoil to dry out between waterings. In cooler months, reduce watering.

Temperature:

The ideal growing range is between 15°C and 32°C. In extreme weather, consider using a shade net for protection.

Plant Characteristics:

Stem:

Thick, succulent, and quadrangular with ridges; tendrils at each node help it climb.

Foliage:

Broad-ovate, trilobed green leaves with toothed edges, opposite to tendrils.

Flower:

Small greenish-white or yellow flowers that turn into red berry-like fruits.

Optimal Pot Size & Support:

Potting:

Use a 7-9 inch pot or grow bag for young plants, and upgrade to a 12-16 inch pot or grow bag for mature Veldt Grapes. Tall pots with adequate drainage holes provide stability and support.

Support Structures:

To encourage the upward growth of the Changalamparanda plant, provide a trellis, stakes, or a creeper net. This support helps the Adamant Creeper climb and keeps it manageable.

Care & Maintenance:

Pruning:

Regular pruning helps maintain size and encourages growth. Remove any dead or damaged parts to promote healthy new shoots. The best time to prune is from late winter to summer.

Fertiliser:

Feed with a balanced water-soluble fertiliser, such as fish amino acid or seaweed extract, during the growing season to keep the plant healthy and vibrant.

Common Problems:

Yellowing or drooping leaves could indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies. Ensure proper care by adjusting light, watering, and temperature.

Pest Management:

Watch out for common pests like spider mites, mealybugs, aphids, and thrips. Treat infestations with neem oil or premium bio pest controller.

Medicinal Uses:

  • Changalamparanda plant, often called the "Bone Setter," is renowned for speeding up bone regeneration.
  • Known for its analgesic properties, it effectively treats joint pain and arthritis.
  • Helps manage ulcers, acid reflux, and indigestion.
  • Promotes lipid metabolism and suppresses appetite, making it a natural remedy for weight loss.

Culinary Delights:

The stems of the Pirandai plant are used to make a tangy chutney, celebrated for its unique flavour and health benefits. You can also extract fresh juice from its stems for daily consumption to boost your overall well-being.
